Jo is an Energy Adviser with the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) . Every day, she supports people across Bath and North East Somerset to understand their energy bills, make their homes warmer and healthier, and access the help that’s available.
How I help people
Many people contact Jo when they’re worried about rising energy bills or struggling to keep their home warm. Others want advice about improving their home or understanding the support that’s available.
“As an Energy Adviser, I help people understand their energy bills, cut costs, and stay warm and safe at home. I also help people understand improvements they can make to their home, like draughtproofing and insulation, and where relevant things like solar, heat pumps, and switching to the right tariff, including time of use options. I also support with supplier issues and help people access any grants or extra help they may be eligible for.”
“Even if you’re not sure whether it’s ‘a big enough problem’, it’s still worth asking, because we can usually point you in the right direction.”

The difference a conversation can make
People get in touch for all sorts of reasons, but many are feeling overwhelmed or don’t know where to turn.
“People contact me for all sorts of reasons, but it’s usually because something has become stressful or confusing. That might be high bills or debt, a cold home, damp or mould, problems with heating or hot water, or just not being sure they’re on the right meter or tariff. Quite often it’s also because they’re getting nowhere with their energy company and need someone to help them untangle it.”
Who should get in touch?
Jo wants people to know they don’t need to wait until a problem becomes serious before asking for help.
“I’d say get in touch if energy costs are getting on top of you or if your home feels hard to heat. And definitely contact us if you’re in a no heat or no hot water situation, especially in winter or if there are health conditions, older people, or young children in the home. Even if you’re not sure whether it’s ‘a big enough problem’, it’s still worth asking, because we can usually point you in the right direction.”
